Über Mariam und Michael
In tiefer Trauer

Sie beugte sich über zu schöpfen;

Dear family and dear friends,

Mariam was a precious gift for the country to which she came.
In remembering her and her husband Michael, I wish to refer back to these words, spoken at their wedding.

Goethe, writing in his epic poem of forced flight, of loss of home and the discovery of a new one, named the girl refugee in it `divine gift`- then that is the meaning of the name Dorothea.

When our newspaper writes: Mariam had given the concept of integration a face, then let it be said that it was Michael who offered her the new home.

In Goethe`s poem there is a projective picture connected to Hermann and Dorothea`s shared future, although their prevailing difficulties are far from having been solved. Nonetheless, they see themselves reflected in the spring, out of which they draw water, and nod and smile at each other therein.

Here we see that the mirror, as `pure image` is not limited to Mariam`s native culture. And Goethe demonstrates something decisive here : integration bears not one, but many faces.

Who do we want to be?
We, all of us, have to nod and smile and recognise each other in the mirror, and true integration occurs when the stranger is perceived as a gift.
And Michael represents the aspect of a culture that would greet the stranger affirmatively as its equal counterpart and would be eagerly willing to share its own life with this counterpart, the welcome guest.

At an Iranian wedding ceremony, the mirror plays a central part. We are now left with the memory of how Mariam and Michael then nodded and smiled at each other (and at us) in its reflection.

This memory remains with us now, an example and a bequest to which we are duty bound.
